Give it one night, two if you like mining history: the gold-era streets and Towers Hill take a half day, and the drive from Townsville is 90 minutes.
Charters Towers is a gold-rush town 90 minutes inland from Townsville, once Queensland's second-largest city. The heritage streetscape, the Towers Hill WWII bunkers and the Venus Battery carry the visit; most travellers see it as a night on the way west or a day trip from Townsville. Two nights is enough for the town plus Ravenswood.
