Thomas Jefferson's Monticello sits 5 km southeast, and dozens of wineries fill the surrounding Albemarle County hills. Get around
Two free systems cover the centre: Charlottesville Area Transit (CAT) city buses and the UVA University Transit Service, plus a free trolley looping between the Downtown Mall and UVA. Do not trust Google Maps for CAT routes. Parking is free in most of the city but paid at Downtown Mall lots. Veo e-scooters are scattered around. For Monticello, the wineries and the Blue Ridge, you need a car, a taxi or a tour.
