Best time to visit Charleston: weather, crowds and events by month

Charleston is a walkable, compact city, so the weather decides how much of the trip happens outdoors. Use the table to pick a window, then check the month notes below for events and prices.

January and February are the cheapest and quietest months. Days are cool rather than cold, around 15–16 °C, with nights near 5 °C, and rain is lighter than in summer. Some tours and boat trips run a reduced schedule, and a few restaurants close for staff holidays. This is the window for low hotel rates and short lines at the historic houses.

March is a transition month: mild, sometimes windy, with spring events starting to fill weekends. Late March into April is the first of the two best windows. May warms to 27–29 °C with rising humidity. It is still a good month, but afternoons get sticky and the first beach weekends fill the nearby islands. June turns hot and humid, around 30–32 °C, with afternoon thunderstorms; it is workable if you sightsee early and stay indoors at midday.

July and August are the months to avoid if heat bothers you. Highs sit at 32 °C or above with high humidity, and the Southeast coast is in hurricane season, which runs June–November and peaks August–October. Daily storm cells are common. If summer is your only option, plan indoor stops, drink water, and keep an eye on storm forecasts.

September stays hot and sits in the hurricane peak, so it is a month to watch forecasts rather than book blind. October into early November is the second best window: mild 22–26 °C days, lower humidity, and the city at its most comfortable for walking. December brings holiday lights and events, cooler days and the year's highest prices around Christmas and New Year.

Charleston hotel rates swing more than the weather does. A mid-range historic-district room that costs about USD 150–200 in January can reach USD 300–450 on a spring festival weekend or in October, and higher still over the December holidays. Flights into Charleston International Airport (CHS) follow the same pattern: cheapest in January–February and on midweek dates, most expensive around spring weekends, summer and the holidays. Rental cars and rideshares are also tighter in peak weeks. If you are coming for a specific event, book accommodation first, then flights.

Build the day around the heat. In summer, walk the historic district and waterfront before 10am, take a long indoor break in the early afternoon, and go out again in the evening. In winter, the middle of the day is the warmest and brightest.
