Charleston airport to city centre: trains, buses, taxis and costs

Charleston is a small West Coast settlement on State Highway 6, between Westport and Punakaiki. There is no terminal, no taxi rank and no scheduled public transport beyond the coach that passes through. Treat this as a road-arrival question, not an airport-transfer one.

The table below compares the realistic ways in. Times are door to door from the listed airport or town, on a normal day with no slips or road works.

SH6 is the only practical road. From Westport it runs south along the coast through Charleston, then on to Punakaiki and Greymouth. The stretch is sealed and mostly two lanes, with a few narrow bridges and single-lane sections; allow extra time in rain, when the coast road can be slow and slips occasionally close it.

From Nelson, SH6 crosses the Buller Gorge before reaching Westport, then continues south. From Christchurch, take SH73 over Arthur's Pass to Greymouth, then north on SH6. Both routes are scenic but slow: plan 3–4 hours at the wheel a day, in line with the country guidance.

There is no fuel, no supermarket and no ATM in Charleston. Fill up and buy supplies in Westport or Greymouth before you arrive.

InterCity runs West Coast services between Nelson, Westport, Charleston, Punakaiki, Greymouth and Christchurch, typically once or twice a day in each direction. Charleston is a request stop, so book ahead and confirm the pickup point; there is no staffed stop.

For door-to-door trips, West Coast shuttle operators based in Westport and Greymouth can be booked for Charleston, and some hostels and lodges arrange pickups. These need to be arranged in advance, not hailed on the street.

If you are coming from further afield, fly into Westport, Nelson or Christchurch, then drive or coach the rest. The TranzAlpine train ends at Greymouth, about 1.5 hours south by road.

The main cost is the vehicle. A rental car runs NZ$50–120 a day plus fuel at NZ$2.60–3.00 a litre; a campervan is NZ$80–350 a day by season. Coaches are cheaper per seat but less flexible, and shuttles sit between the two.

Budget roughly NZ$30–45 in fuel from Nelson, NZ$60–90 from Christchurch and NZ$15–25 from Greymouth, depending on the vehicle. Taxis on the coast are limited and expensive for longer runs; a Westport–Charleston taxi is a special trip rather than a metered fare.

Charleston is a base for the Pancake Rocks at Punakaiki, the Nile River caves and the coast track, not a transport hub. Arrive with a full tank, food and cash, and treat Westport or Greymouth as your service towns.
