Chandigarh is India's first planned city, a union territory that is capital of both Punjab and Haryana. Le Corbusier's grid of 47 self-contained sectors, the Capitol Complex and Nek Chand's Rock Garden are the draw; the city is also the road and rail gateway to Himachal Pradesh and Punjab. Most travellers see it in a day or use it as a clean, calm stop between Delhi and the hills.

- Dec–Feb brings heavy fog on the Delhi–Chandigarh highway, especially at night and early morning — avoid a same-day road transfer in winter.
- Autos and some cabs quote without a meter: fix the price before you get in.
- Summer afternoons (May–Jun) are extreme; do sights before 11:00 and after 16:00.
Chandigarh is one of India's safer and cleaner big cities, with low street crime. The real risks are heat and fog on the highway, unmetered autos, and the Capitol Complex security rules — carry photo ID and expect bag checks.
