Voykit pocket guide · Czech Republic
České Budějovice
Give it 1–2 nights as a South Bohemia base: the square and Black Tower take half a day, Budvar and day trips fill the rest.
České Budějovice is the working capital of South Bohemia, 1.5–2 h by train from Prague and 40 min from Český Krumlov. Its 133 m square, Black Tower and Budvar brewery are the core; the real value is as a cheaper, quieter base for Hluboká, Holašovice and the region's cycle paths. Two nights covers it without rushing.

The historic centre is fully walkable. Trolleybuses and buses cover the rest; buy a 30 Kč one-hour ticket or a 115 Kč 24-hour ticket, validate it on board, and expect inspectors. Bike-sharing (Rekola) and the cycle path to Hluboká suit longer days. A car is a liability in the centre: parking is paid and plate-registered.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Dobrý den on entering shops; handshake with eye contact; avoid: Walking in and out without a word
- Names and titles: Use academic titles if given (pan inženýr, paní doktorka); avoid: First names with older people until invited
- Pubs: Share tables, put a coaster on the glass when you have had enough; avoid: Waving for the waiter; they will come
- Homes: Shoes off at the door; slippers are offered; avoid: Arriving empty-handed; bring flowers (odd numbers) or wine
- Conversation: Dry humour, understatement; avoid: Calling it 'Eastern Europe' or confusing it with Slovakia
- Queues and trams: Give seats to older people; let people out first; avoid: Loud phone calls on public transport
Scams and watch-outs
- Validate your ticket in the bus; inspectors are common and fines apply.
- Parking in the wider centre is paid and you must enter your licence plate at the machine.
- The Prague road (D3) jams on Friday and Sunday evenings; take the train instead.
- Brewery tours need booking days ahead; walk-ins are limited to the daily 14:00 slot.
A calm, low-crime town; the real risks are pickpockets around the station and square, unvalidated bus tickets and fines, and winter ice on pavements. Standard Czech rules apply: zero alcohol if you drive.
