The Central Interior is Uruguay's cow country: rolling hills, lakes, hot springs and small towns across Cerro Largo, Durazno, Flores, Florida, Lavalleja and Treinta y Tres. Sights are spread out and rural ones have no bus service, so a car turns a string of stops into a route and a bus turns it into one base plus long waits. Come for 3–5 nights with wheels, or 1–2 nights in a single town on the Montevideo–Brazil corridor.

- Mild and wet year-round; inland summer days are hotter than the coast, winter nights can dip near freezing. Rain is spread across the year — pack for it.
Spring (Oct–Nov) and autumn (Mar–Apr) give the best mix of mild days and green hills; summer is for the waterfall and lakes, winter for quiet towns.
