Celle
Give Celle one full day and one night: the Altstadt, palace and Bomann Museum fit in a day, and it works as a base for the Lüneburg Heath.
Celle is a Lower Saxon town on the River Aller with about 450 half-timbered houses in a largely intact old town, a ducal palace and a 300-year military history. It sits on the southern edge of the Lüneburg Heath, 35 km north-east of Hanover, and most visitors see it in a day or use it as a base for the heath and nearby towns.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Firm handshake with eye contact; 'Guten Tag' or 'Hallo'; avoid: Hugs with people you have just met
- Names: Herr / Frau plus surname until invited to use first names; avoid: Using 'du' with officials or older strangers
- Punctuality: Arrive on time for tours, dinners and appointments; avoid: Being more than 5–10 minutes late without a message
- Queues and rules: Follow signs, wait at red lights, sort rubbish; avoid: Walking in cycle lanes
- Conversation: Direct and factual; people say what they mean; avoid: Taking directness as rudeness, or joking about the Nazi era
- Home visit: Bring flowers (odd number, not red roses) or wine; shoes off if the hosts do; avoid: Arriving early
- Paying: Say the total including tip as you pay; avoid: Leaving coins on the table and walking off
Scams and watch-outs
- The Garnison Museum opens only Wednesday afternoon and Saturday morning, and closes Dec–Feb.
- Celle is 28 km from the nearest Autobahn; approach is on the B3 or B214, not a motorway exit.
- Some sights keep seasonal or limited hours: check before you build a day around one.
Celle is a low-risk town; the practical issues are limited evening bus service, seasonal sight closures and dark, quiet streets outside the centre after midnight.
