Ceduna
Stop one night in Ceduna to stage the Nullarbor crossing, not to break a single Adelaide–Perth run: plan the onward drive and fuel before you arrive.
Ceduna is the last real town on the Eyre Highway before the Nullarbor, on the western edge of the Eyre Peninsula. Almost everyone here is either driving west, driving east, or working the oyster and fishing boats. Give it one night, eat oysters on the foreshore, and leave early. Two nights only if you want a beach day or a Smoky Bay oyster tour.

Get around
You need a car. The town is spread along the highway and the port is a separate drive around the bay; there is no useful local bus. Fuel up here before the Nullarbor — petrol runs about 20c/litre more than Adelaide. Most travellers arrive on the Eyre Highway from Port Augusta (about 7 h from Adelaide) or turn off the coastal B100 from Streaky Bay.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Distances are the risk: confirm fuel availability and opening hours before you leave, and carry water for the crossing.
- Summer heat waves push past 38 °C with nights above 22 °C; do not plan long walks in the middle of the day.
- Telstra has mobile coverage; Vodafone does not. Download offline maps before you leave Port Augusta.
- Kangaroos and emus on the highway at dawn and dusk — plan to arrive before dark.
- Book caravan parks and motels ahead in school holidays and around Oysterfest in late September.
Ceduna is a small working town and normal precautions apply after dark around the pubs. The real hazards are heat, long empty roads and wildlife at dawn and dusk, not crime.
