Cavendish
Skip as a base unless you want a quiet farm stay: a 1–2 h stop for the Settlers Walk and a pub meal, or one night if you are driving the Grampians.
Cavendish is a small farming village of a few hundred people on the Wannon River, 26 km north of Hamilton and about 40 km from the southern edge of the Grampians. There is no train and no fuel stop worth planning around; you come here for a riverside walk, a brew-pub meal and a farm cottage, not for a sightseeing list. Treat it as a half-day stop on a Grampians drive or a single quiet night.

- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- No fuel, no ATM and no supermarket in the village: bring cash and fill up in Hamilton.
- The pub closes early in the week (check days before you drive out) and the general store keeps short hours.
- Summer is bushfire country: check the CFA and VicEmergency warnings before any Grampians drive.
- Mobile coverage is patchy on the back roads; download offline maps.
- Kangaroos and sheep on the road at dawn and dusk.
Very safe for a village this size; the real risks are the drive (wildlife at dawn and dusk, long empty roads), summer bushfire and heat, and having no fuel or cash within 26 km (16 mi).Very safe for a village this size; the real risks are the drive (wildlife at dawn and dusk, long empty roads), summer bushfire and heat, and having no fuel or cash within 16 mi (26 km).
