Catawba Island is a township on the Ottawa County peninsula, not an island any more: the channel that once cut it off was diverted. What it has is a sheltered shore, marinas and the Miller Ferry dock at Catawba Point, which makes it the practical mainland base for South Bass Island (Put-in-Bay) and Middle Bass. Sights on land are few — a state park, a wildlife park, a small museum — so most visitors use it for one or two nights of boating, ferries and lakeside eating, then move on to Port Clinton or Sandusky.

Get around
You need a car: the peninsula is a loop of two roads (OH 53 north from OH 2, and Sand Road off OH 163) that meet at Catawba Point. A 4.8-mile paved walking and biking trail runs along NE Catawba Road (OH 53). Golf carts, bikes and boats are rented locally in season. Sand Road is posted at 35 mph and patrolled.
