Castletownshend
Baile an Chaisleáin
Go for one night, not a base: a single steep street, a harbour pier and a Harry Clarke window. Two nights only if you want Toe Head and Lough Hyne.
Castletownshend is a one-street harbour village 9 km southwest of Skibbereen, population 167 in 2022. There is no castle left to see, no ATM and no bus after early evening, so it works as a quiet night between Baltimore and Bantry rather than a sightseeing stop. The reasons to come are St Barrahane's stained glass, the pier, and Knockdrum ring fort a 20-minute walk uphill.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake, first names quickly; avoid: Over-formality; it reads as coldness
- Conversation: Banter, weather and sport; self-deprecating humour; avoid: Opening with Northern Ireland, religion or the Famine
- Pubs: Buy your round; chat at the bar; avoid: Leaving a round without buying one
- Identity: Say Ireland, or the Republic when you need to distinguish; avoid: 'Southern Ireland' and calling it British
- Driving: Lift a finger from the wheel to thank drivers who pull in for you; avoid: Stopping on narrow bends for photos
Scams and watch-outs
- No ATM in the village; the nearest is in Skibbereen.
- The pub McCarthy's closed in 2024, so evening options are limited.
- Main Street is very narrow with a tree traffic island: drive slowly and fold the mirrors.
- Bus 266 is a few services a day only; check the last one before you commit to a car-free night.
- Raheen Castle is on private land and cannot be approached.
Very low crime; the real risks are single-track roads, winter storms on the pier and the lack of an ATM or late bus. Tell someone your Toe Head plan and carry a rain shell.
