Castlegar is a town of about 8,000 at the meeting of the Columbia and Kootenay rivers, on the southern tip of the Arrow Lakes chain. It is a practical base for outdoor days rather than a sightseeing city: riverfront parks, a Doukhobor museum, a small downtown sculpture walk, and lake beaches 20–40 minutes out. Most travellers pass through on Highway 3 or stop one night between Nelson and Trail.
