Castle Douglas is a small market town in Dumfries and Galloway, population about 4,000, on the A75 between Dumfries and Stranraer. Its own sights are modest: Threave Garden, the ruined Threave Castle on its river island, and a loch with a 3-mile circuit. It works as a one-night stop or a two-night base for the Solway coast, Dalbeattie and Kirkcudbright, and it is a food town more than a sightseeing one. Without a car you are limited to the town and the two Threave sites.

Get around
The town is small enough to walk. Threave Garden and Threave Castle are both about 1.5 miles out and reachable on foot. For Dalbeattie, Kippford, Kirkcudbright or the coast you need a car; buses run to Dumfries and Stranraer but not to the villages. Taxis are limited, so book ahead for evenings.

A quiet, low-crime town; the real risks are single-track roads with passing places, livestock and deer on the A75 and hill routes, and fast-changing Solway tides if you walk the coast.
