Castelo Branco
Give Castelo Branco one full day: the Jardim do Paço and the castle keep are the reason to stop. Sleep one night only if you are using it as a Beira Baixa base.
Castelo Branco is the district capital of inland Beira Baixa, about 2 h 40 min–3 h 15 min by train from Lisbon. The old town is small and walkable: the baroque Jardim do Paço, the Templar castle and the museum cluster sit within 15 minutes of each other. It works as a one-day stop on the Lisbon–Beira Baixa line or as a base for Idanha-a-Nova and the Serra da Estrela foothills.

Get around
The centre is flat enough to walk: castle to Jardim do Paço is about 10 minutes. Local buses cover the outskirts; taxis are cheap for short hops. A car is only worth it for day trips into the region.
