Castellammare del Golfo
Stay 2–3 nights as a beach-and-boat base for Zingaro, Scopello and Segesta; skip it if you want city sights or nightlife.
Castellammare del Golfo is a small Sicilian harbour town at the foot of Monte Inici, about 50 km west of Palermo. It began as the port of Segesta and still works as a gateway: the Zingaro reserve, Scopello's sea stacks and the Segesta temple are all within an hour. The town itself is a castle, a fishing harbour, a curving beach and a grid of streets above it. Two or three nights covers the coast; a single night only works if you arrive by car and leave early.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Say buongiorno (until mid-afternoon) or buonasera on entering shops and bars; avoid: Walking in and pointing without a greeting
- Cheek kisses: Two kisses, right cheek first, among friends; follow their lead; avoid: Kissing strangers or in business settings
- Dress: Smart-casual in cities; covered shoulders and knees in churches; avoid: Beachwear, bare chests and flip-flops away from the beach
- Queues: At delis and pharmacies take a number (numerino); avoid: Assuming the crowd at a bar counter is chaos — pay at the till first where asked
- Restaurants: Wait to be seated and ask for the bill; avoid: Splitting a bill item by item with a large group
- Conversation: Food, football and family are safe openers; avoid: Mafia jokes and north–south stereotypes
- Dinner at a home: Bring pastries, wine or flowers (not chrysanthemums, which are for funerals); avoid: Refusing seconds too firmly
Scams and watch-outs
- The train station is about 3 km from the centre: budget a taxi or a long walk with bags.
- Zingaro reserve entry is limited and can close on high-fire-risk days: check before you set out.
- Beach parking fills by mid-morning in July and August.
- Sunday buses to Palermo and Trapani are sparse or absent: check the day before.
A calm, low-crime resort town; the real risks are summer heat, unshaded coastal trails, sea currents on exposed beaches and unlicensed boat trips. Use marked lidos, keep valuables out of parked cars and check the Zingaro reserve status before walking.
