Castaic
Stay 1 night only if you are breaking the I-5 drive or riding Six Flags; otherwise sleep in Santa Clarita, 15 min south, and day-trip the lake.
Castaic is a rural town at the north end of the Santa Clarita Valley, on Interstate 5 about 40 miles north of Downtown Los Angeles. Its one real draw is Castaic Lake State Recreation Area, a county reservoir with boating, fishing and summer swimming. Almost everything else here is highway services: gas, fast food and a handful of motels. Treat it as a stop, not a base.

Get around
You need a car. There is no useful local transit for visitors, the lake entrance is a few minutes' drive from the I-5 strip, and Los Angeles is 40 miles south with heavy commuting traffic on weekdays. Metrolink commuter trains serve Santa Clarita, not Castaic itself.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Summer heat inland: carry water, and do not leave people or pets in a parked car.
- Lake entry is charged per vehicle, and lower-lake swimming is seasonal — confirm before you drive up.
- Weekday I-5 traffic between Castaic and Los Angeles can double your drive time.
- Cell coverage is fine in town but patchy on the surrounding ridges and trails.
Castaic is a low-crime small town; the real risks are heat, freeway driving and lake water. Lock the car at trailheads and do not swim outside the marked lower-lake area.
