Best tours in Cartagena: walking, food and day tours

Cartagena rewards a small number of paid tours and punishes the rest. The walled city is compact and walkable, so the value of a guide is context — why the walls were built, where the slave market stood, which balconies are original — not access. Book one walking tour early in your stay, then use what you learn to explore on your own.

The second useful category is food. Cartagena's coastal kitchen (arepas de huevo, ceviche, coconut rice, posta negra) is spread across Centro and Getsemaní, and a guided evening walk gets you into small kitchens you would otherwise pass. Third is anything that needs a boat or a vehicle: the Rosario Islands, Barú, and the mud volcano at Volcán del Totumo. These are logistics tours, not guiding tours — you are paying for transport and a fixed departure time.

What to skip: paid tours of sights you can enter or walk for free, and any 'city tour' that promises the walls, the Castillo and La Popa in three hours. You will spend most of it in traffic.

Almost everything starts in or near the old town. Walking and food tours meet at the clock tower (Torre del Reloj) at the entrance to Centro, or in Plaza de la Trinidad in Getsemaní. Boat departures for the islands leave from Muelle de la Bodeguita, a short walk north of the walls; arrive 30–45 minutes early because the port tax queue is separate from the tour check-in.

Volcán del Totumo sits about an hour northeast of the city by road, usually combined with a stop at Manzanillo del Mar or a beach lunch. Castillo San Felipe and La Popa are on the edge of the old town and reachable by taxi in 10–15 minutes; a guided visit is optional.

Morning is the only comfortable window for walking tours from roughly December to April; by 11:00 the walls and plazas are hot and crowded. Most operators run a 08:00–09:00 departure and a second at 16:00–17:00. Food tours run in the evening, typically 17:30–20:30, and the Bazurto Market walk runs in the morning when the market is at its busiest.

Island boats leave between 08:00 and 09:30 and return in the late afternoon; the crossing is about an hour each way in good conditions. Expect a port tax and an island entry fee on top of the tour price, and bring cash in small notes — card machines on the docks are unreliable.

Tipping is not included. The local norm is COP 20,000–50,000 per person per day for a guide, and 10% propina voluntaria appears on restaurant bills.

Book walking and food tours directly with the operator or through a hotel reception; both are easy to arrange the day before. For islands and the mud volcano, book at least two days ahead in high season (Dec–Apr) and on puente holiday weekends, when boats and vans sell out. Online booking platforms work but add a fee, and the meeting point is the same.

Pay in Colombian pesos where you can. Some operators quote in USD and apply their own exchange rate. Ask for the guide's name and the group size before paying: a 'small group' can mean 20 people in Cartagena.

Getting to the meeting points is simple. The clock tower and Plaza de la Trinidad are inside the old town, walkable from most hotels in Centro and Getsemaní. Muelle de la Bodeguita is a 10–15 minute walk from the walls or a short taxi ride. For the mud volcano, most tours include pickup from Bocagrande, Centro or Getsemaní.

Take the walking tour on day one. It gives you the street layout, the safe evening routes and the names of dishes, which makes the rest of your stay cheaper and easier. Then use the free sights — the walls at sunset, Plaza Santo Domingo, the clock tower — without paying again.

For the islands, decide what you actually want. A 'Rosario Islands tour' can mean a 45-minute stop at an aquarium, a crowded beach club, or a quiet stretch of water for snorkelling. Ask which island and how long you get there. If you want beach time rather than a boat circuit, a Barú day trip is usually the better buy.

Protect your afternoon. Boat and volcano days start early and end tired; do not book a food tour the same evening. And keep valuables minimal on the docks and beaches, where touts and petty theft are the main annoyance.
