Carstairs
Skip as a base: Carstairs is a 1–2 h stop for the parish church, village green and a Lime Walk, then move on to Lanark or New Lanark.
Carstairs is a small Clydesdale village of about 840 people, 5 miles northeast of Lanark, with a separate railway settlement at Carstairs Junction. There is little to hold a visitor beyond an hour or two: a 1795 parish church, a village green and war memorial, a short riverside walk, and the remains of Carstairs House seen from a distance. The railway station is the practical reason to know the name — it sits on the Edinburgh–Glasgow line and is served by the Caledonian Lowland Sleeper — but it is not a sightseeing base. Treat Carstairs as a half-day add-on to Lanark, New Lanark or Biggar, not a destination in its own right.

Get around
Carstairs is small enough to walk: the church, green and village centre are within a few minutes of each other. Bus 37/137 runs hourly from Lanark through Carstairs village, the hospital and Carstairs Junction station to Carnwath. A local taxi firm covers the villages. A car makes the surrounding sights far easier, since buses are infrequent and some stops are a walk from the sight.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- Carstairs Junction station has no step-free access: the island platform is reached by stairs, with no lift.
- The station ticket office is staffed but there are no ticket machines — buy before you travel or you may be buying on board.
- Trains from Edinburgh to Carstairs Junction run roughly every two hours, so a missed connection can cost you an hour or more.
- The State Hospital is a secure psychiatric facility north of the junction; do not approach it as a visitor attraction.
- If the hospital escape siren sounds (tested on the third Thursday of each month at 13:00), get inside a locked building or drive away and tune to local radio for updates.
Carstairs is a quiet, low-crime village and the usual risks are weather and footing rather than people: wet paths on the Lime Walk, fast traffic on the A70, and no step-free access at Carstairs Junction station. The State Hospital is a secure facility, not a sight — keep away from its perimeter.
