Base in Aviemore, not Carrbridge: come here only for the Landmark park or the old packhorse bridge, 2–3 h, then leave.

Carrbridge is a village of about 700 people in the Spey Valley, 24 mi (39 km) southeast of Inverness and 6 mi (10 km) north of Aviemore, on the edge of the Cairngorms. The reason to stop is one 1717 packhorse bridge, a forest theme park and a rail line; the reason to sleep elsewhere is that the station sits half a mile from the centre and the A9 bypasses the village with no direct access. Treat it as a half-day from Aviemore or a quiet one-night halt with a car.

Get around

You need wheels here: the sights are scattered over 5 mi (8 km) and the station is a 10–15 min walk from the centre. Stagecoach Highland runs bus X37 (Inverness–Carrbridge–Grantown-on-Spey, about five a day Mon–Fri, three on Saturday) and bus 39 (Kingussie–Aviemore–Carrbridge, every two hours Mon–Sat). Inter-city coaches pass on the A9 and do not stop. Trains run every 2–3 h to Inverness and south via Aviemore, Kingussie, Pitlochry and Perth; the Caledonian Sleeper calls on some nights. A car makes Boat of Garten, Loch Garten and Duthill easy; without one, plan around the bus times.

Scams and watch-outs

  • The A9 bypasses the village with no direct access: from the south join the A95 loop at Granish north of Aviemore, then the B9135; from the north leave onto the A938.
  • Carrbridge station has a staffed ticket office but no machines, no cafe and no toilets; Platform 1 is reached by a footbridge with stairs and no lift.
  • Do not walk across the Old Packhorse Bridge: the parapet and deck were lost in the 1829 flood and only the arch remains.
  • Not all trains to Inverness stop at Carrbridge, and the sleeper does not run every night: check times before booking a bed here.
  • Landmark park is a seasonal, dated-ticket attraction: check opening dates and book online for the lower price.

Very low crime; the real risks are single-track roads with passing places, ice and deer on the A9 at dusk, and weather that turns on the hills within an hour. Tell someone your route before any Cairngorms walk and carry waterproofs.
