Carova
Carova is a 4WD-only beach community for a quiet escape: one full day or two nights, not a stop on a loop. Go only if you have a high-clearance 4×4 and want empty beaches and wild horses.
Carova is the northernmost community of the Outer Banks, reachable only by 4WD on the sand. There are no paved roads, shops or restaurants — just rental houses, the Atlantic and the Corolla wild horses. Most visitors come for a long weekend or a week in a vacation rental. A day trip from Corolla is possible but requires a 4×4 and a tide check.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- You must have a 4WD vehicle — a regular car will get stuck. Rental companies in the area often restrict 4×4 use on the beach; confirm in writing.
- No fuel, food, water or supplies for sale in Carova. Stock up in Corolla (about 15 min north on the beach) or Currituck before crossing the 4WD ramp.
- Tide times matter: drive near the waterline at low tide. At high tide the beach narrows and soft sand can trap vehicles.
- Wild horses are wild: stay at least 50 feet away. Feeding, touching or approaching them is illegal and dangerous.
- Cell service is spotty. Download maps and contact info before you lose signal.
Carova is very safe; the main risks are getting your vehicle stuck in soft sand, dehydration (bring plenty of water) and sunburn. Respect the wild horses and the ocean rip currents.
