Carolina Beach is a small barrier-island town 20–25 minutes south of Wilmington on NC-421, with a boardwalk, a wide Atlantic beach and a state park on the inland side of the same island. It is a beach base, not a sightseeing city: two nights covers the sand, the boardwalk and the carnivorous-plant trails, and most people drive in from Wilmington.

Get around
Walk or cycle the boardwalk area — summer parking is the bottleneck, and free 2-hour roadside spots fill early. Wave Transit runs buses from Wilmington; a car is the practical way to reach the state park, Kure Beach and Fort Fisher. Bikes and multi-person pedal carts are rentable in town.
