Carnarvon is the last town of any size on the North West Coastal Highway before the arid run north to Exmouth and Port Hedland, at the mouth of the Gascoyne River in Western Australia's Gascoyne region. It grows fruit and vegetables, still lands some fish, and its sights sit a few kilometres out of the centre, so a car matters more here than in most Australian towns. Most travellers use it to sleep, refuel, restock and see the old space-tracking dish; two nights only pay off if you want the Blowholes or a plantation tour.

The centre is walkable, but the OTC Dish, the harbour and Babbage Island are 2–5 km out, so hire a car (Avis and Budget have desks here) or use Gascoyne Taxis and Carnarvon Taxis. Scams and watch-outs
- Cyclone season runs roughly Nov–Apr; the town was badly damaged by Cyclone Seroja in 2021 and the historic jetty was lost.
- One Mile Jetty is derelict and unlikely to be repaired; do not plan the trip around walking it.
- Mobile coverage is patchy: Telstra 4G reaches north to Minilya, Optus is hit and miss, Vodafone has no signal, and there is no 5G.
- The road north past the Blowholes is a dead end with no onward route to Exmouth.
- Summer is hot and humid; carry water and avoid long walks in the middle of the day.
A small, quiet town; take normal precautions, especially after dark. The real risks are heat, long empty drives, wildlife on the road at dusk and thin mobile coverage.
