Carmila
Stop for one night on the Bruce Highway between Rockhampton and Mackay, or skip: the beach is the only sight and there is no transport to it.
Carmila is a highway town of about 340 people on the Central Queensland coast, 101 km south of Mackay and 237 km north of Rockhampton. It exists for road travellers: a pub, a motel, a rail stop and a long empty beach a few kilometres east. Treat it as a break in a long drive, not a destination.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Online maps: search for "Carmila Hotel", not "Carmila" — the pin can land about 15 km north of the town.
- The turn-off onto Music St is poorly signed in both directions; slow down and use navigation.
- No public transport from the rail stop or highway to the beach.
- Wet season (Dec–Mar): road closures and cyclones are possible; check Queensland Traffic before driving.
- Kangaroos and cattle on the road at dusk and dawn.
- Fuel and food are limited — fill up in Mackay or Rockhampton.
A quiet highway town and generally safe. The real risks are the drive (kangaroos at dusk, long empty stretches, wet-season flooding) and swimming: check locally for stingers and currents before entering the sea.
