Carmarthen is the county town of Carmarthenshire and the westernmost Roman town in Britain, with a market, castle ruins and a Merlin legend attached to it. It is not a sight-heavy destination: the town centre is walkable in an afternoon, and the real draw is the surrounding county, which needs a car. Most travellers pass through on the A40 or the train to west Wales and are better off sleeping one night than building a trip around it.

Get around
The centre is small: market, castle, King Street and the bus station are all within a 10-minute walk. For everything else you need a car or a bus — Aberglasney, the National Botanic Garden, Gwili Railway and the Tywi Valley Path are 5–10 miles out with no practical walking route. Trains run along the coast to Swansea and west to Tenby and Pembroke Dock.
