Carmacks
Stop for one night on the Klondike Highway between Whitehorse and Dawson City: fuel, food, a bed and the Tage Cho Hudan centre. Skip as a destination.
Carmacks is a village of about 500 people on the Klondike Highway, 177 km north of Whitehorse and 355 km south of Dawson City, and the home of the Little Salmon/Carmacks First Nation. Almost everyone arrives by road on the way north or south. One night is enough; the reason to stop is the Northern Tutchone cultural centre, the Yukon River bridge and a break in the drive.

Scams and watch-outs
- Distances are long: 177 km to Whitehorse, 355 km to Dawson City, with no services in between.
- Summer roadworks on the Klondike Highway can hold you for 20–30 minutes — check Yukon 511 before you set off.
- Fuel, food and beds are limited; in July book a room ahead and do not arrive on an empty tank.
- Winter driving means ice, extreme cold and short daylight; carry an emergency kit.
- Cell coverage is patchy outside the village — download offline maps.
Carmacks is a small, quiet village and crime is not the issue. The real risks are the drive: 177 km (110 mi) to Whitehorse and 355 km (221 mi) to Dawson City with no services, wildlife on the road at dusk, winter ice and extreme cold.
