Carluke
Skip Carluke as a base: it is a commuter town with one hotel. Use it for a half-day stop between Glasgow and Lanark, or sleep in Motherwell instead.
Carluke is a small Clydesdale town 5 miles north of Lanark, mostly a dormitory for the Glasgow–Motherwell corridor. Its draw is thin: a Victorian high street, a windmill stump, a restored tower house at Braidwood and a butcher that has traded since 1857. Trains from Glasgow Central take about 50 minutes, so it works as a short stop on the way to New Lanark, not as a place to spend a night.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- Carluke station has no toilets and no step-free route to Platform 1 except a ramp from the car park.
- Rural buses thin out in the evening and on Sundays: check the last service before you commit to a late return.
- The town centre is quiet after about 18:00; most pubs and takeaways close early by city standards.
A quiet commuter town and one of the safer places in Scotland; the real risks are dark, unlit rural roads, fast traffic on the A73 and A71, and thin late bus services.
