Cardiff is compact, so a good date here is two or three stops, not a long list. Start in the centre, where the castle, the arcades and the market sit within a few minutes of each other, then move to the bay for the evening if the weather holds.

The bay is the strongest single pick: a flat waterfront path, boats, and the Wales Millennium Centre lit up after dark. It is free, it works at any budget, and it gives you somewhere to walk and talk rather than sit opposite each other in silence. On a wet or windy night it loses most of its appeal, so keep an indoor backup ready.

Most of the romantic things to do in Cardiff cost nothing. The castle grounds, Bute Park, the arcades and the bay path are free; you pay only if you go inside the castle or book a show. That makes Cardiff a good city for a low-budget date and an easy one to extend if the evening is going well.

Expect to pay for dinner, drinks and tickets. City centre restaurants are cheaper than the bay, and the difference is usually £20–30 for two. Pubs and bars in the centre run later than restaurant kitchens, which often stop taking orders around 21:00. Sunday trading hours are shorter in England and Wales, so check before planning a Sunday daytime date.

Cardiff is on the main South Wales line from London Paddington, with direct trains taking roughly two hours. The station sits at the edge of the city centre, so you can walk to the castle, the arcades and the shopping streets in under 15 minutes. If you are coming for an evening, an advance ticket booked weeks ahead is much cheaper than a walk-up fare.

Within the city, the centre is walkable and the bay is a 20–30 minute walk or a short train or bus ride from Queen Street. Buses and trains run into the evening, but check the last service if you are staying out late. Driving in is possible, but parking in the centre is limited and expensive; the train is simpler for a date night.

Book dinner and any show in advance for Friday and Saturday nights, when the centre and the bay fill up. If you want a quiet evening, aim for a weekday or an early sitting. Pubs are relaxed and need no booking; restaurants with table service usually add a service charge, so check the bill before tipping extra.

Cardiff weather changes quickly. Carry a light rain jacket even on a clear afternoon, and keep one indoor option in mind: the arcades, the covered market, a gallery or a cinema. In winter it gets dark by about 16:00, which makes the bay lights a good early-evening plan rather than a late one.

May to September gives the best chance of a dry evening for the bay and Bute Park. Summer also brings longer daylight, so a post-dinner walk still has light. Spring and autumn are quieter and cheaper, with shorter days but fewer crowds in the centre.

December suits couples who like Christmas markets and lights, though it is cold and busy. Avoid major match days at the stadium if you want a calm city centre: hotels, bars and trains get crowded and prices rise. Check the fixture list before you book.
