Rules in force · 5Drug trafficking can carry the death penalty in Singapore…
- Southeast Asia ↗Drug trafficking can carry the death penalty in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, Brunei and Myanmar; never carry a bag or parcel for anyone.
- Southeast Asia ↗Carry a passport valid for at least six months from entry with two blank pages; airlines refuse boarding on less.
- Cambodia ↗Apply for the e-visa only on the official government portal; lookalike sites charge extra. Some nationalities can also get a visa on arrival.
- Cambodia ↗Angkor Wat and other active temples enforce a dress code: shoulders and knees covered, or you are turned away at the gate.
- Cambodia ↗US dollars are used for most tourist prices; carry clean, undamaged small notes and some riel for change under one dollar.
This is Cambodia's southwest: the Cardamom range and the Elephant Mountains run from Pailin and Battambang down through Pursat and Koh Kong to Kampot, Kep and Sihanoukville. The coast is the easy half — Kampot for the river and pepper farms, Kep for crab and empty roads, Koh Kong for mangroves and the Thai border. The interior is genuinely remote: poor roads, mined ground off the marked routes, and no transport connection worth the name between Koh Kong and the northern mountains. Pick one base, day-trip from it, and treat the middle as a guided trip rather than a drive.

- Kampot 3, Kep as a day-trip
- 5 nights
- Kampot 3 + Koh Kong 2 (or the reverse, entering or leaving via Trat)
- Koh Kong to the northern mountains is an expedition, not a transfer — expect dirt, river crossings and no scheduled transport.
- Night driving on National Highways 3, 4 and 48 is a bad idea: unlit trucks, cattle and scooters.
- Do not swim at unmarked beaches; check locally for currents and any posted warnings.
Day-trips door to door
| To | From | Door-to-door p50 | Last return | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kep | Kampot | 40 min | unknown | Crab market is busiest at lunch; the coast road back is the point of the trip. |
| Sihanoukville | Kampot | 120 min | unknown | Only worth it as a ferry connection to the islands, not as a beach day. |
| Koh Rong | Sihanoukville | 180 min | unknown | Ferry from Sihanoukville; sea state decides whether it runs. |
| Koh Rung Sanloem | Sihanoukville | 180 min | unknown | Quieter island; fewer daily boats than Koh Rong. |
| Koh Russei | Sihanoukville | 60 min | unknown | Closest island to the mainland; short crossing. |
| Pursat | Battambang | 150 min | unknown | Gateway to the Tonle Sap and the northern Cardamom edge. |
