Carbonear

Give Carbonear one night as a Baccalieu Trail stop, not a base: Water Street heritage, Harbour Rock Hill and the island view fit a half day.

Carbonear is a town of about 4,800 on the west side of Conception Bay, 110 km from St. John's by the Trans-Canada Highway then Route 70/75. It is one of the oldest permanent settlements in Newfoundland, with a harbour that appears on Portuguese maps from the late 1500s, a burned-and-rebuilt history, and a compact Water Street of 19th-century merchant buildings. It works as a half-day to one-night stop on the Baccalieu Trail between St. John's and Bonavista, not as a multi-day base.
