Capital Region Iceland
Sleep in Reykjavík for three nights; do the Golden Circle or the south coast as full days by car or tour, and keep one day free for weather.
Rules in force · 3
- Iceland ↗Iceland is not in the EU but is in the Schengen area. Check the entry rules for your passport on official sources.
- Iceland ↗Driving off marked roads is illegal and fined heavily; F-roads into the highlands open only in summer and require a 4x4.
- Iceland ↗Check the road authority's conditions map and the Met Office forecast every morning, and leave a travel plan on SafeTravel for hikes and remote drives.
The capital region is one base and a set of long day trips. Reykjavík fills a day and a half on foot; the Golden Circle, the Blue Lagoon and the south coast are each a half to full day, and winter weather can cancel any of them. Keep the Reykjavík bed, take a day pack, and leave a spare day.
Where to sleep
Downtown 101 for first-timers, the Old Harbour for quieter nights.
Geothermal spa near the airport; book a slot.
First stop of the Golden Circle; about an hour by car.
Night sequences
- 3 nights
- Reykjavík 3, one Golden Circle day by tour
- 5 nights
- Reykjavík 3, then two nights on the south coast by car (planned)
- Do not plan a same-day return for a flight after a full-day trip in winter; weather delays are common.
