Capel Curig
Base here 2 nights only if you are walking or climbing; otherwise sleep in Betws-y-Coed and drive through for the views.
Capel Curig is a tiny village of about 200 people at a road junction in the middle of Eryri (Snowdonia), on the A5 between Betws-y-Coed and Bangor. There is no station, no high street and almost nothing to see from the car park. What it does have is mountain access: Moel Siabod rises straight from the village, the Glyderau and Carneddau ranges start at the door, and Plas y Brenin, the national outdoor centre, sits a mile up the road. Come for a night or two of walking, not for sightseeing.

Get around
You need a car, a bike or your feet. The A5 runs through the village and the A4085 branches south to Llanberis; buses on the A5 corridor link Betws-y-Coed, Capel Curig and Bangor a few times a day (check the current timetable). The nearest railway station is Betws-y-Coed, about 5 miles away, so most people arrive by road. Within the village, walking is the only option.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- Mountain weather changes fast: carry waterproofs, a map and a head torch even on a short walk.
- Mobile signal is patchy in the valleys; download offline maps before you set off.
- Roadside parking is limited and fills by mid-morning on fine weekends.
- No petrol station and no cash machine in the village: fill up and draw cash in Betws-y-Coed or Llanrwst.
- Tell someone your route and expected return time; mountain rescue call-outs here are common.
A very low-crime village; the real risks are the mountains, the single-carriageway A5 and drivers who do not expect walkers on blind bends. Call 999 and ask for mountain rescue if someone is injured on the hill.
