Where to stay in Cape Verde: best areas and types of hotel

Cape Verde is ten islands with very different jobs. Choose the island for what you will do all day, then the town inside it, then the property. Inter-island flights and ferries are the constraint: confirm each link the day before, and do not plan five islands in ten days.

Peak season is roughly November to April, when European winter sun seekers fill Sal and Boa Vista; the trade winds also make this the kitesurfing window on Sal. Rain, when it comes, falls mainly from August to October, and the same months are hottest and most humid. Carnival in Mindelo falls around February and pushes prices and occupancy up in São Vicente.

Start with the flight. Sal has the most connections from Europe and the UK, so it is the easiest base and the cheapest to reach. Boa Vista also has international flights but fewer. Praia on Santiago takes some international arrivals and is the domestic hub for Fogo, Brava and São Nicolau. Mindelo on São Vicente is reached by a short domestic hop from Sal or Praia, or by ferry from Santo Antão.

Then pick the town. On Sal, almost everyone stays in Santa Maria: walkable, restaurant-lined, with the beach and kitesurf schools at the edge of town. On Boa Vista, Sal Rei is the main town and the south coast has the large resorts; the island is quieter and more spread out, so a car or transfers matter. On São Vicente, Mindelo puts you near the music bars and the ferry pier. On Santiago, Praia is the practical base, with Cidade Velha a short drive west. On Santo Antão, Paul and Ribeira Grande sit in the green valley, Ponta do Sol is closer to the north-coast trails, and Porto Novo is only useful as a ferry port.

Then pick the property type. Small guesthouses (residencial, pensão) are the norm outside resorts and are usually the best value; ask about air conditioning, hot water and whether breakfast is included, because these vary more than the star rating suggests. Apartments and villas suit groups and longer stays, especially in Santa Maria and Sal Rei. All-inclusive resorts concentrate on Sal and Boa Vista and make sense if you want a fixed cost and will not move around.

Finally, check the practical layer: distance to the beach or trailhead, whether the road is paved, and whether the property arranges airport transfers. On Santo Antão and Fogo the roads are cobbled and mountain-hugging, so a place on the trail you actually plan to walk beats a place in the biggest town.

Prices are quoted in Cape Verdean escudo, pegged at about 110.27 per euro, and many hotels also quote in euros. Card payment works in resorts and larger hotels but not everywhere in guesthouses, so carry cash for small properties and for the airport security fee.

Book early for the December–April high season, Christmas and New Year, and Carnival in Mindelo; the same weeks sell out on Sal and Boa Vista. In the low season, especially May to July and September to October, you can often book a few days ahead, but confirm that the property is actually open, since some small guesthouses close in the quiet months (check).

Wind is a real factor on Sal and Boa Vista: a beachfront room can mean constant wind and sand, which is fine for kitesurfers and less so for others. On Santo Antão, cloud and rain can settle on the ridge for days, so a valley base is often more comfortable than a high one.

Travel insurance that covers medical evacuation is worth having here: serious cases are flown to Praia or off-island, and the nearest full hospital may be on another island.
