Cape Jervis
Treat Cape Jervis as a ferry terminal, not a destination: one night before an early SeaLink sailing, or a 2–3 h stop on the drive from Adelaide.
Cape Jervis is a settlement of a few hundred people at the tip of the Fleurieu Peninsula, where the road ends and the Kangaroo Island ferry leaves. Almost everything here is logistics: the wharf, the caravan park, the tavern and general store, a lighthouse above the cliffs, and a short walk to the lookout. The nearest town with a supermarket, fuel choice and car rental is Victor Harbor, about 50 minutes away. Come for the crossing, the coastal walk and one quiet night; do not build a holiday around it.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Book the SeaLink ferry ahead in school holidays and long weekends; vehicle spaces sell out.
- The LinkSA coach from Adelaide does not guarantee the ferry connection — if it runs late, you miss the sailing.
- No car rental and no fuel in town; fill up at Normanville or Victor Harbor before you turn off.
- Summer bushfire risk on the Fleurieu Peninsula: check the CFS warnings before driving on total fire ban days.
- Mobile coverage is patchy on the coast road south of Yankalilla.
Very safe for a small coastal town; the real risks are the sea cliffs, bushfire on hot windy days and driving the coast road at dusk when kangaroos are on the verge.
