Give Cape Coast 2 nights: one full day for the castle and town, one for Kakum or Elmina. Skip it as a day trip from Accra — the road eats 4 h each way.
Cape Coast is Ghana's former colonial capital and the site of Cape Coast Castle, a UNESCO-listed slave-trade fort with hourly guided tours. The town itself is small and walkable, but the road from Accra is slow and often jammed, so most travellers sleep here rather than day-trip. Two nights covers the castle, the fishing harbour and either Kakum's canopy walk or Elmina's St George's Castle.

Get around
Taxis are the main way around town and are cheap by Western standards; agree the fare before you get in. Shared three-wheeled 'pragya' run from Pedu Junction to the centre for a few cedis per person. Tro-tros and STC buses leave from the GOIL station just west of Pedu Junction for Accra, Takoradi and Kumasi.

- Some beaches near town are not safe for swimming; ask at your hotel before going in.
- Carry small cedi notes: change is scarce and card payment is rare outside hotels.
Cape Coast is generally calm and easy to walk in daylight. The real risks are the Accra road, unlit streets after dark, pickpocketing in crowds and swimming at beaches without a local's say-so.
