Canowindra
Give Canowindra one night if you are ballooning or here for the April–May balloon challenge; otherwise it is a 2–3 hour stop on the Cowra–Orange road.
Canowindra is a small town on the Belubula River in the Central West of New South Wales, 25 minutes north of Cowra on the Lachlan Valley Way (B81). It calls itself the balloon capital of Australia and holds a balloon challenge in late April and early May. The Age of Fishes Museum, one of only two fish-fossil museums in the world, and a 500 m stretch of heritage shopfronts on Gaskill Street are the other reasons to stop. There is no train; you arrive by car or by NSW TrainLink regional coach.

Get around
The town is small enough to walk: Gaskill Street, the museum and the cafés are all within about 10 minutes on foot. To reach the balloon launch sites, wineries or the river you need a car; there is no local bus service.
