Give Canmore 2 nights as a cheaper, quieter base for Banff and Kananaskis; skip it if you want the lakes on your doorstep.
Canmore sits 80 km west of Calgary at the southeast gate of Banff National Park and the northwest edge of Kananaskis Country, and it costs less per night than Banff for the same mountains. The town centre is walkable in 10–20 minutes end to end, so you sleep here, drive or ride Roam Transit to the park, and keep the car for Kananaskis and the Nordic Centre.

Get around
The centre is walkable: most sights, shops and restaurants sit within 10–20 minutes on foot. Roam Transit runs local buses plus a route to Banff, where you can connect onward to Lake Louise. Taxis are short-hop cheap inside town limits (from about C$5). A car is the practical choice for Kananaskis, Grassi Lakes and the Nordic Centre.
