Candelaria is a small river town in the Campeche jungle, a designated Pueblo Mágico and a full-service stop on the Tren Maya between Campeche and Palenque. Travellers come for the El Tigre archaeological site, the Río Candelaria and the surrounding forest, not for the town itself. One or two nights covers it; the plaza is plain and the heat is real.

Get around
The centre is walkable; even-numbered streets run east–west and odd-numbered streets north–south, but some streets end without warning. Bikes work well for the outskirts. Taxis wait near the Parque Principal or can be called to your hotel. Boats for the river and El Tigre leave from the waterfront; agree the price and return time before boarding.
