Cancún public transport: tickets, passes and apps

For almost every visitor the answer is a single cash fare. Cancún's city buses are flat-fare, hop-on, hop-off, and there is no cheaper multi-ride product that pays off over a short stay. Pay the driver in pesos, keep small notes and coins, and you are done.

A pass only makes sense if you are commuting between the Hotel Zone and downtown several times a day. Even then, the saving is small: four rides at MXN 12–15 is MXN 48–60, and no day pass undercuts that by much.

The one ticket worth buying in advance is the ADO coach from Cancún airport to the city terminal, Playa del Carmen or Tulum. Buy it on the ADO app or at the counter inside the terminal; it is fixed-price, air-conditioned and luggage-friendly.

City buses take cash only. Hand the driver a MXN 10 or MXN 20 note or exact coins; change is sometimes available but not guaranteed. US dollars are usually refused or accepted at a poor rate, so carry pesos.

Contactless bank cards and phone wallets are not accepted on city buses. They work fine at ADO counters, at the Tren Maya ticket office and at ferry piers.

For coaches, book on the ADO app or buy at the terminal. For app-based cars, Uber and DiDi operate in Cancún but are blocked at some airport pick-up points and in parts of the Hotel Zone by taxi unions; confirm the pick-up point before you book.

Cancún splits into three practical zones: the Hotel Zone (Zona Hotelera), downtown (El Centro) and the airport corridor south of the city. City buses run the length of the Hotel Zone and into downtown on a flat fare, so the price does not change with distance within the urban area.

The airport sits about 20 km south of downtown and is not on the city bus network. Use the ADO coach, a pre-paid taxi or a private transfer. Colectivos and ADO coaches cover longer hops along the Riviera Maya, including Playa del Carmen and Tulum.

The Tren Maya adds a separate fare structure with classes and resident discounts; foreigners pay more than residents, and some legs run only a few trains a day.

Cancún International (CUN) has no city bus link. The cheapest reliable option is the ADO coach from outside the terminals to the downtown bus terminal, with onward service to Playa del Carmen and Tulum. Buy at the ADO counter or on the app; the coach takes about 30–45 minutes to downtown depending on traffic.

Pre-paid airport taxis and private transfers cost far more but go door to door. Agree the price before you get in, or book through your hotel. Shared shuttles are a middle option for the Hotel Zone.

If you are heading to the Tren Maya, check which station serves your hotel: the airport station and the downtown station are different, and both are some distance from the Hotel Zone.

Keep small peso notes for bus fares; drivers rarely have change for MXN 200. Board at the front and pay as you get on.

City buses in the Hotel Zone run frequently during the day but thin out late at night; plan a taxi or app car after midnight.

For longer trips along the Riviera Maya, book the ADO coach in advance during high season (December to April) when seats sell out.

If you plan to rent a car for day trips, compare that against coach fares for the same legs; the car only wins when you are covering several stops in one day.
