Cancún in December: what to expect

December sits at the start of the dry season on the Yucatán and Caribbean coast, and it is one of the most reliable beach months of the year. Days are warm and mostly sunny, humidity is lower than in summer, and rain usually arrives as a short shower rather than an all-day soak. Evenings are mild enough for a light layer, not a jacket.

The trade-off is the sea breeze and the occasional "norte" — a cool front that can push through in winter and bring a day or two of wind and cloud. It rarely lasts long, but it can make boat trips to Isla Mujeres or snorkelling days choppier, so keep one flexible day in your plan.

Hurricane season officially ends on 30 November, so December carries very little storm risk compared with September and October.

December has two very different halves. The first three weeks are busy but manageable: flights and hotels are cheaper than at Christmas, beaches have space, and restaurants do not need a reservation. From around 20 December, Mexican holiday travel and international Christmas and New Year trips collide, and Cancún becomes one of the most expensive beach destinations in the Americas.

If your dates are fixed to the Christmas week, book accommodation and flights as early as you can — the best-value rooms in the Hotel Zone and downtown sell out first, and last-minute prices climb steeply. If your dates are flexible, the first half of the month gives you the same weather for noticeably less money.

Expect higher prices for tours too: Isla Mujeres catamarans, cenote day trips and Chichén Itzá excursions all fill up, and airport transfers get slower in the peak days.

December in Cancún is built around Christmas and New Year rather than a single local festival. Hotels and the Hotel Zone put up lights and decorations, and resorts run Christmas dinners and New Year's Eve parties, usually with fixed menus and advance tickets.

The other date to know is 12 December, the feast of the Virgin of Guadalupe, one of Mexico's most important religious days. In Cancún it is marked with processions and church services rather than a big tourist event, but it is a national holiday period and adds to domestic travel.

December is the month to be on the water. The reef and the shallow bays around Cancún and Isla Mujeres are clear and calm on most days, so snorkelling, diving and catamaran trips are at their best. The underwater museum and the reef off Isla Mujeres are the standard half-day options.

Inland, the cenotes and the Maya sites are more comfortable than in the summer heat. Chichén Itzá, Tulum and Cobá are all doable as day trips, but start early: the big sites fill with coaches by mid-morning and the sun is strong by noon. Mérida and the colonial towns of the Yucatán are also pleasant in December, with cooler evenings than the coast.

If a cold front makes the sea rough, swap a boat day for a cenote or a ruins day and keep the beach for later in the trip.

Pack for warm days and mild evenings: light clothing, swimwear, a hat, sunglasses and high-factor sunscreen — the winter sun is still strong at this latitude. A light long-sleeve layer or thin jacket is worth having for air-conditioned buses, restaurants and the occasional cool, windy day.

Bring reef-safe sunscreen if you plan to snorkel or dive, and a dry bag or waterproof phone pouch for boat days. Insect repellent is useful for cenotes and jungle excursions, where mosquitoes are present even in the dry season.

For the Christmas period, add one smart-casual outfit if you have booked a New Year's Eve dinner, and keep copies of your bookings — peak-week check-in and transfers run slowly.

November is the shoulder month before the Christmas peak: still warm, cheaper, but with a slightly higher chance of rain and the tail end of the season. January keeps the dry, sunny pattern and the high-season crowds, with cooler evenings and strong demand through the first week.

October is the month to avoid if you can — it is the tail of hurricane season and the wettest, quietest, cheapest period. February is similar to January: dry, busy and expensive, with whale season on the Pacific coast but no real change on the Caribbean side.
