Go for 4–5 nights if you want beach plus ruins; base in the Hotel Zone for sand, downtown for prices. Skip if you want a walkable town.
Cancún is a purpose-built resort city on the northeast tip of the Yucatán, split into two separate halves: the Hotel Zone, a 22 km strip of beach, resorts and malls, and El Centro, the mainland city where about 900,000 residents live. There is almost no pre-1970s history here — the city was a government tourism project — so come for the Caribbean water, the Maya sites within day-trip range and the diving, not for colonial streets. Most visitors stay 4–5 nights; a week works if you add Tulum, Cozumel or Isla Mujeres.

Get around
Buses R1 and R2 run up and down Blvd Kukulcán and into Centro, roughly every few minutes; pay per boarding in pesos or US$1 bills. Uber, DiDi and Cabify cover the city and often beat taxi prices. Taxis have no meter — agree the fare before you get in. The Tren Maya links the airport to Tulum, Playa del Carmen, Mérida and Maya sites.

Scams and watch-outs
- Taxis have no meters: agree the price before boarding, or use a rideshare app.
- Touts sell tours and timeshares aggressively in the Hotel Zone — never sign anything on the street.
- Pickpocketing on crowded buses; keep bags in front of you.
- Hurricane season runs roughly Jun–Nov; check forecasts and insurance before booking.
- Mexico allows one laptop duty-free per person; a second computer can trigger a customs charge.
- The R2 'Mercado 28' bus does not stop at the market itself — you may be dropped blocks away.
The resort zones are heavily policed and generally safe for tourists; the real risks are taxi overcharging, tour and timeshare touts, pickpocketing on crowded buses, and the Jun–Nov hurricane season. Use rideshare apps or agree taxi fares first, and keep valuables out of sight.
