Canberra in March: what to expect

March is Canberra's transition month. Summer heat has broken, but days are still long and mostly sunny, with highs around the mid-20s °C and nights that need a jumper. The city sits in a basin at about 570 m, so it cools faster after sunset than Sydney or the coast, and mornings can feel sharp if you are out early for a hot-air balloon or a lake walk.

Rain is moderate and usually arrives as short afternoon showers or a single wet day rather than a washout. UV is still strong through the middle of the day, so sun protection matters even when the temperature is mild. Bushfire smoke from surrounding ranges is possible in a dry March; check conditions before long walks in the hills.

The summer school holidays end in late January, so by March Canberra is running at a normal pace. Weekday hotel rates are usually well below the December–January peak, and you can often book the museums and galleries without queuing. The exception is the Canberra Day long weekend in the second week, when Canberrans and visitors from Sydney and Melbourne fill the city for Enlighten and the balloon festival.

If your dates are flexible, aim for the first week of March or the second half of the month. If you want the events, book accommodation two to three months ahead and expect weekend rates closer to summer levels. Most national institutions are free to enter, so the main cost is where you sleep and eat.

March is one of the busiest event months in the capital, built around Canberra Day and the Enlighten festival. Dates shift each year, so confirm before booking travel.

March suits the outdoor side of Canberra. Lake Burley Griffin is at its best for walking and cycling, the Australian National Botanic Gardens are still green before the autumn turn, and the lookouts on Black Mountain and Mount Ainslie give clear views on settled days. Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve and the Namadgi foothills are good day trips while the weather is mild.

The national institutions — the Australian War Memorial, National Gallery, National Museum, Questacon and Parliament House — are indoor options for a wet afternoon and are free or low cost. The wine region around Murrumbateman and Hall is a comfortable 30–40 minute drive, and March is harvest time in the vineyards.

Pack for two seasons in one day: a light T-shirt and sun hat for the afternoon, a mid-layer and a jacket for the evening. A compact rain jacket is worth the space. Comfortable walking shoes matter because the main sights are spread out and you will cover a lot of ground on foot. Bring sunscreen and sunglasses — the UV index stays high even when it is 22 °C.

February is hotter and busier, with the tail of the summer holidays. April brings cooler days and the start of autumn colour, plus the Easter break. May is the quietest and cheapest of the three, but nights are cold and some outdoor events wind down.
