Best tours in Canberra: walking, food and day tours

Canberra is a planned city built around a lake and a triangle of national institutions, which makes guided walking unusually rewarding: you cover the big sights in a few hours without a car. Start with the free guided tour of Parliament House, then add one paid walk and one food or day tour if you have the time.

Paid bus loops exist but rarely beat walking plus a short rideshare or bus hop, because the distances inside the triangle are short and the stops are close together. The exceptions are day tours out of the city, where a bus or 4WD is the only practical way to reach the mountains or the coast.

Most national museums and galleries in Canberra have free general admission, with ticketed special exhibitions. Guided tours inside them are often free or a small add-on, and they run on set daily times rather than continuously, so check the day's schedule when you arrive.
