Çanakkale

Base here 1–2 nights for Troy and the Gallipoli memorials; the town itself is a half-day. Ferries and buses are the way in, not the airport.

Çanakkale sits where the Dardanelles narrow to 1.5 km, and it is the practical base for two of Turkey's biggest draws: ancient Troy, 30 km south, and the 1915 Gallipoli battlefields across the strait. The city is a working university town of about 144,000 with a walkable waterfront, a castle-based naval museum and a lively student bar strip. Most travellers give it one or two nights: one full day for Troy or Gallipoli, one for the town.

2 km southeast of the centre; flights from Ankara about three days a week. Most travellers arrive by bus or ferry instead.

Get around

The centre is walkable: ferry pier to the Naval Museum is about 15 minutes on foot. Dolmuşes run south along the beach strip and toward the War History Museum. For Troy and the Gallipoli peninsula, tours or a rental car are the realistic options; Avis is by the ferry pier and Budget 500 m north on the waterfront.

Etiquette

  • Greeting: Handshake; 'Merhaba' (hello) or 'Selamün aleyküm' in conservative areas; cheek kisses between friends of the same sex; avoid: Offering a hand to a conservative woman first — wait for hers

Scams and watch-outs

  • The Lodos, a strong southwesterly, cancels ferries; build slack into any crossing day.
  • The 1915 bridge closes to high-sided vehicles above 50 km/h wind and to all traffic above 125 km/h.
  • Do not swim the Hellespont as a casual challenge: 1.5 km wide, 70 m deep, strong currents and shipping lanes.
  • The tourist office has closed; book Troy and Gallipoli tours through travel agents or your hotel.
  • Some sights (Piri Reis gallery, Güzelyalı museums) have been closed or uncertain for years: check before you go.

Çanakkale is a calm, safe university town; the real hazards are wind-cancelled ferries, summer heat at Troy and the strong currents if you think about swimming the strait.
