Campos dos Goytacazes

A half-day stop on the BR-101 between Rio and Espírito Santo: see the historic centre and the São Salvador church, then move on. Not a base.

Campos dos Goytacazes is a mid-sized city in northern Rio de Janeiro state, founded in the 17th century. It sits on the BR-101 highway, about 3 h north of Rio de Janeiro and 1.5 h south of Vitória. The city has a modest colonial core, a cathedral and a few cultural sites, but most travellers use it as a lunch or fuel stop. The nearby Serra do Imbé offers hiking for those with extra time.
