Camperdown
Give Camperdown one night as a Warrnambool–Great Ocean Road stop: climb Mount Leura at sunset, sleep, drive on. Skip it as a base.
Camperdown is a small volcanic-plains town on the Princes Highway between Melbourne and Warrnambool, with a rail line, three trains a day and a 35 km rail trail to Timboon. The draw is the crater country around it: Mount Leura, Mount Sugarloaf and the twin lakes Bullen Merri and Gnotuk. It is a stop, not a destination.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Trains are infrequent: check the V/Line timetable before you commit to a rail arrival.
- Mount Leura Road is unlit and has wildlife at dusk: drive slowly and watch for kangaroos.
- Lake Bullen Merri is a volcanic crater lake: cold water, no lifeguards, check before swimming.
- Fuel and food options thin out after the bakery closes; fill up in Colac or Warrnambool.
A quiet country town; the real risks are wildlife on unlit roads at dusk, cold crater-lake water and long gaps between trains. Lock the car and keep to lit streets at night.
