Campbellton
Give Campbellton one full day plus a second for Sugarloaf or the Restigouche battle site; skip it as a base if you are not driving or riding the Ocean train.
Campbellton is a small Restigouche River town of about 6,900 people on New Brunswick's Acadian Coast, joined by a bridge to Pointe-à-la-Croix in Quebec. It is a stop on VIA Rail's Ocean and on the Maritime Bus line, and it works best as a one- or two-night break between the Gaspé and the Acadian Coast rather than a destination in itself. Salmon fishing, a ski hill and a riverfront walk are the reasons people stop.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- Winter temperatures drop below −20 °C and snow is heavy from December to March; check road conditions before driving.
- NB 17 southwest to the Maine border has long forest stretches with almost no services; fuel up first.
- Many restaurants and the RV park close outside the summer season; check hours before you arrive.
- The Ocean runs only three times a week in each direction; a missed train can mean a long wait.
Campbellton is a small, quiet town and the usual risks are weather and distance, not crime: winter cold and snow, dark unlit roads out of town, and long service-free stretches on NB 17. Keep to lit streets at night and check road conditions in winter.
