Give Cambridge one full day and one night: Galt's riverfront core on foot, then a car for the Hespeler Road sights. Two nights if you add African Lion Safari or a rail-trail ride.
Cambridge is one of three cities in the Region of Waterloo, about an hour west of Toronto by car on Highway 401. It was formed in 1973 from four towns — Galt, Preston, Hespeler and Blair — and each still has its own main street. Galt, the largest, holds most of what a visitor walks to: the Grand River, the old stone commercial blocks and the farmers' market. The rest of the city is car country: malls and chain hotels along Hespeler Road, the butterfly conservatory and African Lion Safari out past the 401. It is a stop on a Southern Ontario loop, not a destination on its own.

Get around
Grand River Transit (GRT) runs the buses, and the ION light rail plus express bus 302 links Cambridge with Kitchener and Waterloo. Within Cambridge, walking works inside one of the old cores — Galt to Preston to Hespeler is a long walk, not a stroll. A car is the practical choice for the Hespeler Road strip, the butterfly conservatory and African Lion Safari. Cambridge has no passenger rail station; VIA Rail serves Kitchener, Guelph and Brantford.
