Best day trips from Cambridge: how to get there and what to see

Cambridge sits in the Region of Waterloo, about an hour west of Toronto by car. That puts two cities, several small towns and a large city all inside a day. The table below compares the main options by travel time, cost band and what you actually do when you arrive.

Kitchener is the easiest win: the ION light rail links Cambridge with Kitchener and Waterloo, so you can leave the car at home. The downtown core has the Kitchener Market, the Centre in the Square venue and a cluster of restaurants and breweries. Waterloo adds the university district and a steady café scene; both cities are compact enough to cover on foot in an afternoon.

St Jacobs is a short drive north and is built around its farmers' market and antique shops, with Mennonite farm country on the roads around it. Elora is the scenic pick: the Grand River cuts a gorge through the village, with trails along the rim and a swimming hole that locals use in summer. Guelph is a university town with a walkable centre and riverside paths.

Stratford is the theatre day: the Stratford Festival runs from spring into autumn, and the town itself has riverfront gardens and a compact downtown. Toronto is the full-day option: museums, the CN Tower, St Lawrence Market and Kensington Market, plus evening shows. Driving in and parking downtown is the main cost and hassle; GO Transit is the lower-stress choice if the schedule fits.

The Region of Waterloo's ION light rail makes Kitchener and Waterloo genuinely car-free, and it runs into the evening. For anything further, GO Transit buses and trains connect the region with Toronto and Guelph, but frequencies are lower on Sundays and holidays.
