Cambridge
Give Cambridge one full day and one night: walk the historic centre and Long Wharf, then drive to Blackwater refuge. Two nights if you want the Tubman park and a skipjack sail.
Cambridge is a small Eastern Shore harbour town on the Choptank River, founded in 1684 and about halfway between the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Ocean City on US-50. The historic centre is walkable in an afternoon; the real draw is the water and the marshland around it — Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge and the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad site are both a short drive south. Most visitors come for one night, or as a stop on the way to the beach.

Get around
The historic centre is small and walkable — High Street to Long Wharf is about 10 minutes on foot. Everything else (Blackwater, the Tubman park, Spocott Windmill) needs a car; there is no useful local bus for visitors. The Eastern Shore is flat and good cycling country. Parking in the centre is on-street and usually free.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- US-50 is a fast divided highway with few crossings: drive between the centre and the hotel strip, don't walk it.
- The Harriet Tubman Museum is small and staffed by volunteers — call ahead to confirm it is open.
- Blackwater's Wildlife Drive and trails are dawn to dusk; the visitor centre keeps shorter weekday hours.
- Summer is hot and humid with mosquitoes near the marsh: bring repellent and water.
- Some smaller museums and galleries close on Mondays and Tuesdays.
Cambridge is a small town and the tourist centre is calm by day and evening. The practical risks are the fast US-50 highway, summer heat and marsh mosquitoes, and driving after dark on rural roads with deer. Lock your car and keep to lit streets at night.
